Roof Rats in Commercial Venues

How black rats behave above ceilings and along roof lines in commercial venues — and what actually works to control them.

Short answer

Roof rats — Rattus rattus, also called black rats or ship rats — are the climbers of the rodent world. In commercial venues they live above the ceiling, in roof voids, along cable trays and inside wall cavities rather than at floor level. If you have noises overhead after close, droppings on top of shelving or in ceiling voids, and rub marks along beams or service pipes, you are almost certainly dealing with roof rats. Controlling them requires trapping on the elevated runs they actually use, sealing high entry points along the roof line, and removing the food and harbourage pressure that keeps them there.

Rodenticide alone is a poor fit for roof rats in food venues. Animals die inside inaccessible voids and the entry route stays open. Mechanical trapping combined with roof-line proofing is the more defensible approach in commercial food environments.

Why this matters

Roof rats are especially disruptive for commercial venues because they operate out of sight and travel across the top of stored goods and dry services.

Food safety. Roof rats move across pallets, upper shelving and stored packaging. Contamination often shows up on stock rather than on prep surfaces, and can require product disposal, cleaning and documented corrective action.

Building damage. Roof rats gnaw insulation, cabling and timber. Cable damage in commercial roof voids is a recognised fire and continuity risk.

Audit and compliance. Activity above the ceiling is easy to miss until an audit finds it. Documented evidence of ongoing monitoring and mechanical control in the areas roof rats actually use is what auditors expect to see.

Customer confidence. Noises in the ceiling during service, dust from voids or a rodent seen along a beam are reputation events. Silent, well-placed trapping and proofing prevent them.

What to do immediately

  1. Record when and where noises are heard. Note the time, the area of the ceiling, and whether the activity moves along a predictable path. Roof rats reuse routes; the pattern points to the run.
  2. Check elevated surfaces for droppings and rub marks. Look on top of tall shelving, along beams, cable trays, service pipes and inside accessible ceiling voids. Roof rat droppings are pointed and slightly curved.
  3. Inspect the roof line externally. Eaves, flashings, weep holes, vents and service penetrations are the classic high entry points. Look from ground level with binoculars if the roof isn't safely accessible.
  4. Do not seal gaps yet. Closing the wrong hole can trap rodents inside the void or hide the evidence needed to map active routes. Proofing follows inspection, not the other way around.
  5. Arrange a professional inspection. Ask specifically for elevated trapping placement and a roof-line proofing plan, not a floor-level bait program.

Common mistakes

Trapping at floor level only. Roof rats rarely visit floor traps. Devices placed on the floor along skirtings will sit empty while activity continues overhead.

Relying on rodenticide in the roof void. Roof rats commonly die inside insulation or above ceiling panels where they cannot be retrieved. Odour, flies and awkward removal usually follow, and the entry route remains open.

Treating a shared roof void as a boundary. In terrace and strip retail, roof voids often run across multiple tenancies. Ignoring the neighbouring building leaves an active corridor into yours.

Sealing eaves before mapping activity. Closing a gap on a used route can trap rodents inside or push them further into the building. Proofing works only after active routes are identified.

Roof rats live above floor level.
