Rats do not appear inside a venue by chance. They travel to it, and the path is usually predictable. The main pathways are deliveries, drainage, roof lines and party walls, service penetrations, and waste areas. In most commercial venues, at least two of these routes are active at any given time — which is why closing entry points one at a time rarely works. It has to be done systematically, and after the active routes have actually been identified.
Understanding these pathways is what turns rodent control from a repeating problem into a resolved one.
Why this matters
Trapping alone will reduce a rodent population, but it will not stop rodents from returning. Entry points are the reason infestations recur. Every commercial venue that repeatedly has "the same problem every few months" almost always has one or more unresolved routes into the building.
Food safety. Every active entry point is an ongoing contamination risk. Even between visible sightings, rodents may be travelling through prep areas, stores or voids at night.
Audit exposure. A food safety officer or auditor will typically look at the fabric of the building — door seals, floor wastes, wall penetrations, roof access — as part of assessing pest management. Visible gaps are hard to defend even without an active sighting.
Cost. Repeat treatments for a recurring problem cost more over time than a proofing program that closes the routes properly the first time.

- Walk the perimeter. Look at every external door, roller shutter, delivery entry, waste enclosure, service riser and drainage cover. Note anything that does not seal cleanly.
- Check service penetrations. Where gas, water, refrigeration and cable services enter the building, look for open collars, missing escutcheons or soft-sealant repairs that have shrunk or fallen out.
- Inspect roof access and voids. Where safe and accessible, look at roof line junctions, weep holes, damaged eaves and any point where the roof meets neighbouring tenancies.
- Review delivery routines. Note how long rear doors are held open, whether pallets and produce are checked on arrival, and how quickly waste is moved to the enclosure.
- Arrange a professional inspection. Have the routes documented, prioritised and closed in the correct order — trapping active routes first, proofing them once traffic has stopped, then sealing secondary vulnerabilities.
Common mistakes
Sealing gaps before identifying active routes. Closing entry points at random can trap rodents inside the building, push them into new areas or hide the evidence a technician needs to follow. Proofing should come after the active routes have been mapped.
Using soft sealants only. Silicone, expanding foam and rubber trims are quickly chewed through. Effective proofing uses steel mesh, escutcheon plates, brush seals and hard fill materials — soft sealants are only the finishing layer.
Ignoring drainage. Floor wastes and gullies are one of the most under-checked routes in commercial venues. A missing cover or cracked gully can quietly channel rodents from the sewer network directly into the kitchen.
Assuming a tidy venue can't have rats. Cleanliness helps, but it does not remove entry routes. A spotless kitchen with an unsealed roof line, an old floor waste and a rear door held open for 20 minutes at delivery time is still exposed.
